to cerebral palsy, spanning several conditions. Cerebral palsy is caused
by brain damage occurring either during pregnancy, during delivery, or
shortly after delivery. With several different types of cerebral palsy,
each being classified by the way in which they affect the individual,
ataxic cerebral palsy is the least common form. Ataxic cerebral palsy
affects 5 to 10 percent of individuals with cerebral palsy.
Ataxic cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the cerebellum, which is in
the base of the brain. The cerebellum is the control center for balance
and coordination and coordinates the actions for different groups of
muscles. Ataxic cerebral palsy therefore affects coordination of
movement. Ataxic cerebral palsy usually affects all four limbs and the
trunk. In addition, ataxic cerebral palsy is characterized by poor or
low muscle tone, also known as hypotonic.
Ataxic cerebral palsy can affect an individual in several ways. A person
with ataxic cerebral palsy will usually have a wide-based gait, or walk.
Because of their poor sense of balance they tend to walk with their feet
unusually far apart. In appearance, a person with ataxic cerebral palsy
will look very unsteady and shaky. This is due to low muscle tone where
the body is constantly trying to counter-balance itself.
The most significant characteristic of ataxic cerebral palsy is tremor,
especially when attempting quick or precise movements, such as writing
or buttoning a shirt. Also known as intention tremor, this symptom of
ataxic cerebral palsy worsens when attempting a voluntary movement. For
example, when reaching for an object, such as a book, the hand and arm
will begin to shake. As the hand gets closer to the object the trembling
gets more severe, increasing the completion time necessary for the task.
Although there is no cure for intention tremor in ataxic cerebral palsy,
several treatments for cerebral palsy can help in reducing its effects.
Although not suggested for long term us in ataxic cerebral palsy, drugs
such as primidone and benzodiazepine can be effective in alleviating
ataxic cerebral palsy symptoms. Botulinum toxin A, commonly referred to
as botox, has also been found effective in treating head, hand, and
voice tremors by relaxing tightened muscles.
A relatively new technique in treating intention tremor in ataxic
cerebral palsy is cooling. Cooling of the forearm is achieved by
wrapping the forearm, excluding the wrist and hand, in a cryomanchet
using a circulating fluid. After being cooled, the arm of the individual
with intention tremor experienced reduced tremor for approximately 30
minutes after cooling. Cooling of the arm may be useful before
performing activities of daily life such as applying make up, taking a
meal, or writing and signing documents. As a consequence, this may lead
to a decrease in patients' dependency on caregivers.
Ataxic cerebral palsy can be extremely difficult for an individual to
handle. Through testing different methods of treatment the most
effective method can give some independence to an individual affected by
ataxic cerebral palsy. A team of medical practitioners is necessary to
properly evaluate the patient and determine which treatment is right for
them.

Tips for Going Gluten-Free

I know it seems a bit scary to have to go grocery shopping and skip out on some of your favorites like bagels, pretzels and chicken noodle soup.
But, although you can no longer eat wheat, barley, rye and some oats, there are tons of food you can eat. And don’t worry, you don’t have to give up bread forever. Because of the high incidence of celiac disease and gluten intolerance (it is estimated that one in every 100 people in the U.S. have
celiac disease and more go undiagnosed), tons of gluten-free products (including breads and pastas), restaurants and recipes are becoming more readily available. However, it’s still very important to be an informed consumer. Many foods that you would never imagine to have gluten do – like bouillon cubes and soy sauce. Follow these tips to get you on track:
Walk the perimeter
Did you ever notice that many of the foods dietitians advocate for health are on the outskirts of the grocery store? Here you will find fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and proteins like meats and meat substitutes. Fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables (and canned unless
they contain additives or fillers) are naturally gluten free. Beware though of vegetables with sauces as they may contain gluten. When it comes to dairy: Milk, half and half, butter, margarine, eggs, most cheeses including hard cheeses, and cottage cheese are gluten free. Check labels or with the
manufacturer on processed cheeses, cheese blends and flavored yogurts. Make sure to avoid cheeses with vegetable gum, food starch and preservatives not defined by a gluten-free source. Most poultry is also gluten free, just avoid poultry that has been breaded or that is self basting. Fresh meats like beef, meat substitutes and fish are safe to eat. Be careful when purchasing sausages and hot dogs as these foods may contain wheat. Stock up on healthy fats like nuts and oils, which are also gluten-free unless coated in a marinade or candy covering.
Explore your starches
There are many starches that are naturally gluten free. Branch out from your traditional wheat and try: buckwheat, cornmeal, grits, millet, quinoa and rice. Other starches that can be used are legumes, and starchy vegetables like peas, potatoes and corn. If you like to bake, some gluten-free flours include: almond, amaranth, artichoke, sorghum and teff flours.
Purchase your carbohydrate essentials
After diagnosis it can be expensive and overwhelming to run out and buy all gluten-free products. Instead, stock up on the essentials – purchase a gluten-free bread, frozen waffles, cereal, popcorn, gluten-free crackers and gluten-free snack bars. Some great brands include, Bob’s Red Mill, Chex, The Really Great Food Company and La Tortilla Factory.
Look out for hidden sources
Read labels and steer clear of products like: malt, barley, dextrin, candy, some cold cuts (Applegate Farms is gluten free), gravies, imitation fish, soy sauce, teriyaki, vegetables in sauce,
hydrolyzed wheat protein, rice mixes, communion wafers, chips, bouillon cubes, soups, multivitamins, play dough, lip gloss and stamps.

Simple Prostate Health Tips

Prostate health tips may not be talked about very often but are on most men’s minds. There is a reason why most internet ads deal with tongue-in-cheek medical conditions. Google anything that is to do with the nether regions of the body and you will be showered with offers and advertorials. To help you separate the wheat from the chaff and put myths to rest, we’re presenting you with comprehensive prostate health tips.
For the uninitiated, the prostate is a small gland the size of a walnut. It is located inside the body between the bladder and the urethra. Its function is to produce and eject seminal fluid. The most common complications that affect prostate health are:
1. Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate can occur due to infections, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, trauma etc. Infections are usually treated with antibiotics. But a large proportion of cases may be due to causes other than infection and require a different treatment approach.
2. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: Enlargement of the prostate occurs in over 30% of all men between the age of 50 to 70 years. The enlargement blocks the urethra partially or completely. As you can imagine, this is very painful and dangerous. If treatment with drugs fails, surgery which may involve complete removal of prostate is indicated.
3. Prostate Cancer: The incidence of prostate cancer is practically nil before the age of 50. Over 50, incidence shoots up and is above 30% for those over 70 years. Inheritance has a big role to play. Other causes which include, diet, infections and medications are still being studied. Incidence of prostate cancer is second only to lung cancer but mortality due to it is not as high because most men with this cancer live long enough to die of other causes.
A list of prostate health tips is below:
1. Cycling: Traditional bike seats are leaf shaped with a nose at the front. The body’s weight ends up resting on the penis against this nose. It limits blood supply to the region and can also cause direct injury. It has been shown to cause erectile dysfunction and other urological complications. Instead go for square seats that do not have a nose. Such seats put your weight on to your pelvic bones that are meant to bear weight and also feel a lot more comfortable.
2. Routine Tests: Until recently, prostate specific antigen test (PSA) was recommended once a year for all men above the age of 50 to screen for prostate cancer. But evidence suggests that detection by this test is not very reliable. Even if cancer is detected early, weather it affects mortality is under debate. If you are over 50, ask your physician if you should opt for a prostate exam and PSA test.
3. Drink lots of water: 3-4 liters to be precise. Water helps digestion, facilitates removal of toxins and helps flush out bacteria. It is the simplest way to reduce incidence of urinary tract infections and will also improve overall metabolism.
4. Diet: A diet high in saturated fats and red meat increases risk of prostate problems. The best option for reducing risk of prostate diseases and for good health in general is a vegetarian diet. A diet high in fiber and containing soy is believed to be beneficial for prostate health. One can substitute red meats with leaner white meat (fish).
5. Eat uncooked fruits and vegetables: Apple pies only benefit the restaurants selling them. The apple that goes into the pie and its nutrients are long dead. Fit in as many uncooked fruits and vegetables into your routine as possible. Cranberry juice has long been believed to alleviate urinary problems. Also, avoid eating fruits and vegetable with other meals to derive their complete benefit. An exception is cooked tomatoes as these have been shown to contain the cancer fighting agent Lycopene.
6. Multi-vitamins: Evidence that vitamin and mineral supplements help in maintaining prostate health has been patchy so far. Getting all required nutrients from your normal diet may not practically be possible. Supplements are the next best thing. Just be sure not to exceed the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance).
7. Smoking and Drinking: Don’t frown; there are no upsides to smoking and drinking. Constant intake of toxic substances is bound to have an effect on the urinary system that has to carry the burden of eliminating these toxins every day.
8. Exercise: No direct link has yet been established between exercise and reduction in risk of prostate cancer. However, exercise does help in reducing obesity, improving blood circulation and increasing BMR (Basic metabolic rate), all of which help in fighting cancer.

Tips and Tricks for a Healthy Halloween

For parents who are trying to curtail their family’s sugar intake, reduce the health risks associated with a growing obesity problem in our children, or just keep the little ones from bouncing off the walls, Halloween can be a scary holiday.
Rachel Willen, chef and creator of the blog Food Fix, offers her personal experience and tips to create a healthy Halloween that won’t disappoint the kids. Here are a few tips to help keep your children healthy:
Think Salty and Savory: Candy is not the only treat that kids crave. Chips, crackers, popcorn and puffed cheese snacks are all high on the list of treats that kids and teens love, and they can be wholesome and much healthier than candy.
Think Refreshing: Last year, Willen says, she used an empty planter she purchased on sale after the season, and filled it with ice and mini bottles of spring water. Willen says it was surprising how many kids were thrilled to have a cool drink while making their rounds. With an icy bottle of water and a crunchy snack to add to their “booty,” there were very few cries of “what, no candy?” To keep your refreshing treats healthy, stick to plain water, flavored and enhanced waters that are sweetened with juice or juice concentrates only, or juice boxes that do not contain any added sugars, corn syrup or sugar substitutes. Smaller portion drinks are more practical and economic as a giveaway.
Trade In Candy: What should you do with all the candy your kids bring home? Negotiate with them to “trade in” their candy for something that they’ve been wanting: a video game, a pair of jeans, a special dinner or just cash toward a higher priced gadget for which they want to save. You can decide, based on your budget, what amount of bartering you are willing to do. Then, go through the treat bag together, letting them choose a set number of goodies to keep, (a week’s worth or some of their favorites), after which they hand over the rest in exchange for their earned gift. Before you toss the loot, try looking for a dentist or orthodontist in your area who runs a candy trade-in program in his or her office. It’s a sweet solution to handling a scary amount of sugar this Halloween.

A hundred strokes and more
boys equally worry about is hair. Boys start carefully tousling them as
soon as they learn to spell the word 'gel' and girls start caring as
soon as they comprehend the function of the looking glass. Though hair
loss is a phenomenon typically known to be associated with age, that
piece of information doesn't stop us from losing more hair from worry
when we see a tangled mass clogging up the bathroom drain when showering.
The visible part of the hair is called a shaft and beneath the skin lie
the root and the follicle. There are on average about a 100,000 hair on
the scalp and we lose anywhere between 50 to 100 strands every day. This
is because not all the hair is growing at any one point in time.
Baldness occurs when hair fall exceeds the number of hair growing.
Teens are generally not afflicted with hair loss (alopecia). The most
common form of hair loss that we've probably noticed is age-related and
is in part hereditary — male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness
(medically known as androgenic alopecia). Most men affected are around
30 years of age. However, often boys in their mid-teens are affected.
Their hairlines begin to recede at the temples, thinning out at the top
of the head. Women generally aren't affected as severely and not until
they are well in their advanced years. Girls, however, may sometimes be
affected early with a general thinning of the hair and should consult
their physician if so.
There are a few other more temporary forms of hair loss that might be
found in teenagers. One of the factors causing transient effects, that a
lot of people will be able to provide examples of, is stress. Hair loss
often follows at the heels of stress, especially when related to an
illness. The key is to work on mechanisms to cope with stress. And when
being prescribed medications, don't be afraid to ask what the side
effects are. Certain medicines for depression and acne can sometimes
lead to hair loss.
Poor diet — one deficient in protein, vitamins and minerals such as
iron, zinc etc., in addition to eating disorders such as anorexia and
bulimia, can be another cause. A diet rich in leafy green veggies, egg
whites, meat and Vitamin B supplements will help in this situation. Keep
an eye on the weighing scale, especially if on the lower side and avoid
crash dieting.
Adopt better hair care habits. Stay away from excessive dyeing, chemical
treatments, blow-dryers, straighteners or curling irons etc. If you are
keeping your hair pulled back in buns or braids too often, you need to
let them down to prevent permanent damage.
Hair loss, though cosmetic, is an awful thing to happen, and
particularly at an age when one is self-conscious as it is. For
androgenic alopecia, over the counter medications — namely minoxidil
sold as a spray or shampoo has shown to help in a small percentage of
people. However, keep in mind that both hair loss and growth might take
a few months to manifest. There are also many hair myths e.g that a 100
strokes with your hair brush at bedtime can improve hair growth; this is
just a myth since excessive brushing might even be harmful.

Health risk from fish pedicures

People with weak immune systems or underlying medical conditions are at increased risk of infection from controversial fish pedicures, experts have warned.
Questions have been raised in recent months over the beauty craze which sees customers place their feet in tanks of water containing dozens of tiny Garra Rufa fish which nibble on dead skin.
While the pampering carries a "very low" risk for healthy clients, those with conditions including diabetes and psoriasis have now been advised against the indulgence.
The pedicures - which are popular in Asia - have been banned in some US states, including Florida, Texas, New Hampshire and Washington amid fears that infections could spread through open wounds.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) today issued new guidance after a panel found fish tank water contained a number of micro-organisms and that infections could be transmitted either from fish to person (during the nibbling process), water to person (from the bacteria which can multiply in water), or person to person (via water, surrounding surfaces and the fish).
While it advised certain individuals to avoid treatment, it said any risk was "very low" for healthy clients when spas adhered to strict codes of cleanliness.
Dr Hilary Kirkbride, consultant epidemiologist at the HPA, said: "Provided that good standards of hygiene are followed by salons, members of the public are unlikely to get an infection from a fish spa pedicure, however the risk will be higher for certain people.
"This is why we feel it's important for salons to ensure the client has no underlying health conditions that could put them at risk, and that a thorough foot examination is performed to make sure there are no cuts, grazes or existing skin conditions that could spread infection."
Garra Rufa fish - a type of toothless carp - have become increasingly popular in salons across Britain, in part because of their novelty value.
Dr Paul Cosford, director of health protection services at the HPA, said the risk posed by the fish tanks could be kept to a minimum if spas followed "strict standards of cleanliness".
"If a member of the public is concerned about the level of cleanliness of a salon they visit, they should report this to their local environmental health department," he said.
Anyone considering a fish pedicure can help reduce health risks by ensuring cuts or infections on the feet or legs are given time to heal before treatment.
Clients are also urged to wait at least 24 hours after having a leg wax or shaving to minimise the chances of contracting an infection.
The HPA guidance has been endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland.

Playing iPad danger for Toddlers
Special applications for toddlers are now widely available, such as Baby Touch: Peekabo or Fish Games, the average claim charged educative. Some even promise useful applications to improve hand-eye coordination and focusing ability of infants to toddlers age 2.5 years.
The parents were not worried about letting their baby fun tinkering with gadgets because they can make their kids smart fast. Preoccupation of children to parents gadgets are also utilized for a moment to rest or do something else. The term is a digital babysitter.
However, the iPad Is that as safe for children's development? Recently experts from The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents returning to limit the time they are toddlers, especially those who were aged less than 2 years, in front of the television screen.
In published reports, the researchers found the time to watch TV for too long will disrupt "the talk" between child and parent, which are important for speech development of children.
Are the effects of watching TV too long to play a iPad? It is not clear. "We do not have the data," said Dr.Ari Brown, a pediatrician and member of the AAP.

Besides applications in advanced gadgets that can not teach a child is considered crucial skills as they can get from the world of three dimensions.
"There is an application building blocks game, but we certainly do not want this to replace the real thing. Babies must learn from the real world," said Dr.Dimitri Christakis, director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development, in Seattle, USA.
Although the experts agreed would benefit less toddler playing gadget, but for older children educational games proven applications that could be positive. If parents only have limited time with their children, experts advise to turn off the gadgets at home rather than let their children alone fun.
"We know parents can not always be together 24 hours a son. But at certain times that we can allow the child is restricted to explore his own game. We can not let it stimulated externally at any time," said Altmann.
